Meet your representatives

Simon Archer
Elected

Hi I’m Simon Archer. Born and raised on the North Shore I am fortunate to live in Hillcrest with my wife Steph and our 3 children, ET 17, Ronin 14 and Kate 11. ET and Ronin enjoyed their time at NIS and have moved on to High School. Kate is loving her first year at NIS in year 7. My career has been in the Building industry, starting out as an Architectural designer and moving into the building supplies sector where I have held senior positions and have run and owned my own company. As a current member of the Northcote Intermediate School Board of Trustees, I am proud of our achievements. It has been a busy time with the recent recruitment of our new Principal and the massive plans for redevelopment of our entire school. All positive outcomes that ensure our kids are enjoying a world class education. Recently I had the pleasure of being escorted around the school by a group of student leaders to view the classrooms in action. I am constantly blown away at the high standard of young boys and girls who attend our school. Even though the school only plays a part in our kid’s upbringing, it is a vital part from which they are flourishing. NIS has become the local intermediate school of choice which indicates we are doing something right. I am personally looking forward to the opportunity to continue to give something back to our school and community and believe that my experience enables me to add value and contribute with common sense, straight shooting and enthusiasm to the governance of NIS ensuring its continued excellence. Thankfully we have the opportunity for continuity in our schools governance with the current board members standing for re-election. NIS is prospering from the outstanding governance the Board has provided combined with the excellent leadership from a high caliber Principal and staff, an asset that not all schools can boast. So if like me, you want to know that your children spend their school days in a safe, nurturing environment which prepares them well for the next step in life, vote for me to continue as one of your representatives on the NIS Board of Trustees.

Sally Clendon
Elected

My name is Sally Clendon and I am standing for the Northcote Intermediate School Board. My son Jack is currently in Year 9 at Northcote College, and my daughter Lily is in Year 4 at Willow Park School. I have been a member of the Board of Trustees at Northcote Intermediate since 2016. I was drawn to Northcote Intermediate because of the core principles that I see at the heart of the school: a strong community spirit, a growth mindset of striving to continually improve, and a focus on the student as a whole person.

I have a PhD in speech and language therapy. I work as a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Education at Massey University, and also as a Consultant. In my consulting role, I work alongside senior management teams, teachers, teacher aides, therapists and parents to facilitate whole school change. My work is focused around maximising the communication and literacy outcomes of students with learning support needs. I also deliver workshops nationally and internationally. My knowledge and understanding in the areas of curriculum, professional learning and development, and supporting students’ learning needs have been valuable in my Board role to date. I have also developed new skills and learned from my fellow Board members.

The next few years will be exciting with significant growth forecast for our community, including our school. We have built strong momentum as a Board, and I am keen to continue to be part of the journey. The students who attend Northcote Intermediate represent a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and have their own unique stories and learning needs. They reflect the vibrant community we live in. I would love the opportunity to continue to work with the Board of Trustees and School Principal at Northcote Intermediate to optimise the learning environment for all children.

Katrina Vicky King
Elected

My name is Katrina King and I am standing for the Northcote Intermediate School Board. I have one son in Year 8 currently and two other children who will be attending the school consecutively over the next four years. I believe I would bring to the Board a great combination of management and communication skills, business experience plus a very strong connection with the community and current day-to-day school life.

I have a Master of Commerce in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese, and spent 10 years working in corporate marketing and communication management roles both in New Zealand and overseas prior to having a family. Over the last 12 years, I have invested thousands of hours into voluntary work at the creche, kindergarten, primary and intermediate schools my children have attended, taking on Chairperson and Secretary roles on Governance Boards and PTAs. I have also been project manager for numerous large fundraising events and a recent school Centenary. I have, and continue to do so at the Intermediate level, offered my time to regularly parent help and assist children who have additional learning needs so I am familiar with the day-to-day school environment.

I am passionate about the future of education and making sure our school does the best it can to provide a positive, safe, excellent and sustainable learning environment for our children. I look forward to taking on the challenges and opportunities that our Board faces and continuing to apply my skills, experience and enthusiasm to our school and community.

Kate Punturiero
Elected

Hi, my name is Kate Punturiero and I'm currently the Board Chair at Northcote Intermediate School. My daughter has now moved onto Northcote College, but my ongoing passion for middle schooling sees me wanting to stand for another term here at Northcote Intermediate. I have lived in Northcote for 11 years and I adore the area we live in and believe we are privileged to have an amazing community of schools for our children to grow and learn in.

I have been on the Board for 3 years and have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with an amazing team of governors, seeing the school through a change in leadership as well as the exceptional period of growth we find our school and community in. We have more than doubled our roll size in the last 3 years, which has seen the need for an increase in classrooms, teaching staff and additional support staff at our school. We are commencing the planning/design of a staged rebuild of the school alongside the MOE, which is an exciting time for our community, staff and future students. I own and run my own business Premium Kids Care which has been operating in our community for over 14 years, I'm lucky to have some of my previous students now as my staff; what a cycle, although it does make me feel old. Having had a previous background in HR, recruitment and being part of the management team/start up team at a high-profile NZ Telecommunications Company, it has provided me with a wealth of knowledge. I have also undertaken papers towards a psychology degree. Thankfully most of our current Board members are standing for re-election which will provide continuity in our governance team which I believe is vital at this time of continued growth and change of management. I personally thrive on the opportunity to give back to our school and community, providing my time, enthusiasm and a common-sense approach. I would be privileged to stand again on the Northcote Intermediate Board of Trustees, as I would like to continue the journey of providing exceptional learning outcomes for our children.

Matthew Shepherd
Elected

Tēnā koutou katoa, my name is Dr Matt Shepherd and I am a current trustee on the Board at Northcote Intermediate School (NIS). I have served two full-terms on the Board (one term as the chair person) and was also co-opted onto the Board for approximately two years before this. I currently work as a Clinical Psychologist and am a Senior Lecturer at Massey University within the School of Psychology. I have worked mainly in the field of child and adolescent mental health and continue to research this area developing psychological resources for youth and families. I have had two children attend NIS and have one child who is currently attending NIS. I whakapapa to Ngāti Tama and am passionate about Māori achievement within the school.

I have enjoyed my time on the Board and it has been a real pleasure and a privilege to see the school develop enormously over the last eight years. As a Board we take student achievement seriously and I am pleased that our student achievement data has risen significantly over the last eight years. As a community there is much excitement as we think about the new buildings that will begin to be built, if elected I’m looking forward to being a part of this process.

I am a current chairperson of Kaipatiki Youth Development Trust and coupled with my job as a psychologist take seriously the emotional health of all of our students within the school. I think we do a great job of this and it is shown through the student feedback about how much the students enjoy attending NIS.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou,

Dr Matt Shepherd
